What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a program developed to shape you into a well-rounded athlete who is prepared for anything; both in sport and day-to-day life. One thing it definitely is not, is specialising. It gives you the opportunity to build full body strength, stamina and flexibility through a variety of functional movements including running, skipping, Olympic Lifting, Kettlebells, bodyweight and gymnastic exercises.

Functional movements are core movements that incorporate as many muscles as possible while also working your coordination and flexibility. These movements performed at maximum intensity lead to dramatic gains in fitness. In the CrossFit program we provide education on movement (safely and effectively), fitness (what it means to be fit and how to go about attaining it) and nutrition (learning how to fuel your body to maximise your results).

As well as the physical side of the program, there is also the community aspect. Performing these high-intensity workouts with fellow CrossFitters forms bonds and develops a powerful support system. Throughout a session there is plenty of encouragement and support and the post-workout high is shared by all.

While CrossFit challenges the world’s fittest – the programming is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any commited individual regardless of experience. In one community, there is a great variety of experience and fitness, but everyone is in it together.

How do CrossFit sessions work?
CrossFit sessions are 60 minutes in duration and consist of a warm up, workout of the day (WOD) and cool down. At CrossFit Coorparoo we follow a Strength and Conditioning Program. A typical WOD will include a strength piece and a metabolic conditioning workout.

At the start of each session the coaches will explain the movements of every workout. You will always be taken through the technique and areas to focus on, as well as the alternative options if you need to scale the workout to your fitness level. Throughout the workout, the coaches will provide plenty of encouragement and also assist you with your form and technique.

The WODs are made up of a variety of movements that are performed for a certain length of time, number of rounds or load:

AMRAP: as many rounds as possible in a certain amount of time
FOR TIME: working through a certain number of rounds for your best time
FOR LOAD: working up to your heaviest load in a movement
Chipper: a longer endurance workout where you chip away at each part

At the end of the session, we will record your results which you can then record in your Beyond the Whiteboard profile (an online tracking program which you receive free access to with your CFC membership). This will allow you to have a benchmark for the next time you perform the workout so that you can aim to beat it and see how much your fitness has improved.

The CrossFit programming is suitable for any age or fitness level as you are able to scale each workout to match your fitness level and ability. You are able to work at your own pace and gradually build up your strength and technique over time.
What are Olympic Lifting sessions?
Olympic Lifting sessions focus on the snatch and clean and jerk movements. This is a slower paced class where we focus on technique and building up to your maximum load working on your strength. These sessions are an excellent complement to your CrossFit sessions to improve your confidence in the Olympic Lifts present in the WODs.

We also program these sessions so that you can attend the Olympic Lifting session followed by a CrossFit session. For example if we work on upper body in the Olympic Lifting session we will then work the lower body in the WOD and vice versa.
What is fitness?
CrossFit’s definition of fitness: increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains

Capacity is the ability to do real work that is measurable using the basic terms of physics (force, distance and time). Life is unpredicatable so real world fitness must be broad and not specialised, both in terms of duration and type of effort.

Ultimately, the fitter you become through the CrossFit program, the more capable you will be at performing a variety of movements at different durations, distances and weight. That is why it’s so useful to record your results so you can track how your fitness improves. When you first start out you may have to scale most of the movements to suit your current level of fitness, but over time you may be able to RX (complete as prescribed) your workouts as you improve your strength, stamina and flexibility.

Opportunities within CrossFit
CFC regularly enter local CrossFit Competitions. These competitions are hosted by CrossFit boxes and consist of a series of WODs run over 1-2 days. Depending on the competition, there are individual and/or team categories.

The WODs are released in the week leading up to the competition, so you really need to be prepared for anything!! The competitions also cater for different levels with some being aimed at beginners and others ranging from beginner to advanced.

At CFC you have the opportunity to work towards joining the CFC comp squad and representing CFC at competitions throughout the year.
No matter where you are now or “what limitations you think you have”, CFC programming allows you to work at your own pace and gradually build up your strength and technique.

When you join the CFC community you will have the fitness and confidence to take on whatever life throws at you!
